Starting with the headline-spectacular.

The unit comes as a black model with cleaning base (ESLA93K) and a silver standalone model (ESLA63S). Both function the same.

This shaver incorporates some firsts for Panasonic: 14,000 rpm motor; a 2'nd motor in the head that copies the Braun foil-pulsing concept and a head that pivots up and down like Braun's have for years (plus the usual Panasonic side to side). And the whole head arrangment is a little more elegant.

Brought forward from the past models are the 4-system head, the ARC foil and nano-sharpened blades.

The black version is a thing of beauty. First class manufacturing with solid, gleaming surfaces and perfect fit and finish. Thick sections of body and foil cap plastics. A premium product through and through.

Its almost 2 years since i bought this razor and its still working well. I replaced the blades and screen once. This was well worth the the high initial cost. It still does a better job than any of its competitors.I just purchased this new razor from Panasonic. I got tired of hair left on my face that neither the Braun Pulsonic 7 or the Norelco Arcitec couldn't get. My family always tell me about the long hairs that were missed and the constant strokes over the same spot to get a reasonably close shave from the competition.
The new Panasonic worked well out of the box. It took 60 minutes to charge it. All I had to do was fill a little water tank with water and slide in the cleaning pack. It couldn't be any easier. My Panasonic was now ready to give me the closest shave I have ever had. I bought some Edge shave gel for sensitive skin, put some warm water on my face and applied the gel. The shaver did the rest. Upgraded from my Panasonic ES8249 (previously reviewed: Panasonic ES8249K Arc IV Nano Vortex Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaving System, Black), and it was worth the upgrade. I paid about half the retail at one of Amazon's partners, so I encourage shopping around; I'm not sure it's $200+ better than the 8249 if you pay full freight, but it's a definite improvement and certainly worth it if you can get it for substantially less than retail. Basically the same function as the 8249 - water-based cleaner, cleaning unit buttons function the same, same cleaning cartridges (a nice touch), wet-dry shave. The head is very large, but is easy to manipulate when you get used to it. Shaver seems to be slightly less noisy than the 8249 when in use; the cleaning unit is definitely noisier in the first few minutes of its cycle, but essentially... Read more

Background:
About 15 years ago I tried all kinds of electric razors (not Panasonic though). Then, the winner was Braun. It was the only shaver that I didn't have to go over a blade with afterwards. I've used every iteration of Braun (their top of the line ones) since then until their current model. (Remingtons are junk, Norelco pulled hair and never gave me a clean shave, it missed thicker hairs, there were other brands, etc). So I will basically compare the performance of this shaver to the newish (1.5 year old Braun Pulsonic self cleaning shaver which I've used exclusively until now).
A little background about me that is important for this review is that I have fast growing thick beard. I can shave more than twice a day and have a 5 o'clock shadow. And on top of that I cut myself if I used a manual razor. I have cut myself with electric razors too (I don't even know how that's possible).

* Closest shave of any electric shaver I've ever used in my entire life.
* Large, flexible head with multiple shaving foils is flexible and shaves my cheeks as closely as a straight blade does.
* Waterproof and very convenient to use in the shower.
* Easy to clean.

Cons:

* VERY expensive!
* Still can't beat a straight blade when it comes to shaving my neck.
* Large head with multiple shaving foils makes it hard to shave precisely, which makes this a bad shaver for shaping beards and sideburns.

Conclusion:

For the price, it should do a better job with the neck. You can get a shave that's ALMOST as good from one of the Panasonic shavers that costs half as much, and you still need a good straight blade to finish the job. Background: My facial hair grows in quickly -- 5 o'clock shadow type guy, and grows a full beard in a couple weeks. I'm also pretty particular about what razors I use (and can use), sticking only to Gillette Mach 3 blades of one variety or another (tried the Schick Quattro, didn't like it). I've never had an electric razor, other than using a low-end model more than 15 years ago which never really did the job. I was sckeptical an electric razor could do the job for me.

Immediately after starting to use this product I was impressed. I get a very, very close shave with it -- comparable to a razor, and without all the effort and mess. Plus, I find this to be a big time saver for me. It takes me about 3 minutes to do the job, and it gets done in the shower which is even better in the mornings when I'm pressed for time (i.e. running late). There's several reasons for wanting to use an electric shaver versus a blade. For me, it's been speed and comfort - an electric is faster, easier and less messy than using a blade and shaving cream. But, a dry shave with an electric is not as ultra close as a blade shave. Close enough for me, but if you're striving for the ultimate in closeness, you typically need to use a blade.

This Norelco is one of the few electrics that will match the closeness of a blade but it comes at a price - time and effort.

The shaver has a dispensing system where you push a button and it dispenses a small amount of Nivea cream. The Nivea is great stuff - very soothing, moisturizes, and has a nice, light scent. You wet your face first, then shave and push the dispensing button anytime you want some Nivea. The problem is, you need to dispense quite a bit of the stuff to get a comfortable shave, which gets pretty costly.

The most outstanding feature of this shaver is its comfort...but that comfort comes at a price. The shaver uses an innovative Nivea lotion dispenser that you pump into the body of the shaver. As you are shaving you press a button to dispense it. This works great for me. Produces a smooth, comfortable shave, I never have even the slightest bit of skin irritation.

As stated in other reviews, the manual does ask you to try the shaver for three weeks. I have and am very happy with how comfortable it is. But it still doesn't shave as close as a razor blade. I find the heads too big on my face to be effective in between my nose and lips so I still use a razor for that. Also I do find myself having to go over spots multiple times to get a trim to my satisfaction. On the other hand I have had electric shavers that cost more and have not performed as well.

Guys, please don't waste your money on the marketed Nivea shaving gel. I have used an in-shower Norelco for over 10 years (2 previous models now extinct). I use to think you had to use this special gel, until the cost was killing me. I tried my old shaving gel and it worked even better than the preferred Nivea. Don't use shaving "foam" though. It is too thick and will clog the razor heads or just fall off your face and provide no protection.

I mentioned this to the customer service folks at Norelco 2 years ago. I realize this is a marketing partnership and money is at stake here, but how many buyers have opted not to buy this product because of the cost-many if you read these reviews. The rep was curteous but I could tell this information would never make it to the public. Please, don't fall for the Nivea only pitch. You can have a great wet shave with gel and save a lot of money over the years. Save your money to pay your taxes. Jim-Branson, MO

I had a Braun 5414 which worked perfectly for 15 years. Yes, 15 years. The longevity was partly due to the fact that it could be plugged in while shaving, thus not overusing the battery.

The Panasonic ES-LT41 (mine doesn't have the "K" after it, whatever that means) cannot be used while plugged in. We'll see if it, and this review, last 15 years. Check back often...

Pros:
Great at shaving. Sharp, efficient, easy to clean. And though Panasonic claims this unit can be cleaned with soap and water, I've always been hesitant to expose steel items to H2O because to me that just spells r-u-s-t. Common sense. I never ran the Braun 5414 under water. Another testament to longevity?

Cons:
The ES-LT41 has a large, bulbous head, making close shaving around mustaches an aiming challenge, specifically under the nose. You're basically shaving blind there.

He has been using Panasonic ES8103S Men's 3-Blade (Arc 3) Wet/Dry Rechargeable Electric Shaver with Nanotech Blades, Silver for years and wanted to have a new shaver. I stop by at Best Buy and was informed this is the replacement of ES8103S Panasonic Nano shaver. My cousin likes this shaver better because this one has a lock button -- it's great for travel. ...and I've tried a bunch, both foil and rotary. None have shaved this close with this much comfort. There is absolutely no razor burn. Even when I tried shaving over portions of my neck several times, nothing but a close shave. Beyond that the razor has a good weight and fits comfortably in my hand. The "minutes left" indicator is very convenient. Cleaning is a snap, just pop open the heads and run them under hot water.

Perhaps the biggest selling point is the 45-day money back guarantee. You try it and don't like it, you get your money back.

The down sides... Forget about using this for a "scruffy look"; there's no height adjustment. It's either a close shave or nothing. If you travel and expect to be gone longer than a single full charge (enough for 60 minutes of shaving) then you need to take along the base. The recharger does not plug directly into the razor. The price - $280 is a lot for a razor. And, you can expect to spend $60 every... Read more

This is my second Norelco 1290x shaver from Amazon. The first one I got was defective since I was not able to turn it on after charging it. I must point out that Amazon was very prompt in replacing the defective shaver. This is what makes Amazon great in my opinion.

Let me say right up front, the 1290x will never match the shave of something like a Gillette Fusion razor. The reason I want an electric shaver is because it is quick and easy to use and it gives a reasonably close shave. The 1290x feels great in the hand, is well constructed and does shave a little smoother and closer than my previous high end Norelco the 6885xl with 9 years of almost daily use, which I am still very impressed with. If only the battery did not die.

The last couple of years I've received two electric shavers as gifts. One was the Norelco 1150 and the other a Remington R7130. Neither did a bang up job. To make a long story short, they both wound up in the donation bin. I have to honestly say that with a thick growth, I am not a big fan of souped up shavers. Still, I keep hoping. I would love nothing more then to find a shaver that did the job. When given the opportunity to take the 1290X/40 for a test drive, I thought maybe this would be the one. After a month's use, these are my thoughts.

My previous Braun shaver lasted 20 years. So when it finally died recently, I had to look for another Braun. Here's what I like about the M-90: (1) it's relatively inexpensive, (2) it's flat, compact and lightweight so that it packs well for travel, (3) it seems to be well-made and all of the parts work well together, (4) the two included AA alkaline batteries lasted four months of daily use, which was a pleasant surprise (still, I would recommend getting a set of low self-discharge batteries, such as the Sanyo Eneloop).

My only reservations are (1) the foil cannot capture the few stray hairs that have grown long or have curled over, though I suspect this is a common problem with the foil design (I just bring along a disposable shaver to tackle this problem) (2) the foil screen on my previous Braun cracked and had to be replaced every couple of years, so I'll wait to see if Braun has made the screen more durable.

As caveats, I would describe my beard density as significantly below average and I have fairly sensitive skin. I have generally shaved with a double bladed razor in the past, but I have had problems with irritation of my neck. This little shaver comes fairly close to a razor shave on the face and is, on a whole, better on the neck, with significantly less irritation. I have taken to keeping one at work and another in my gym bag.

This item is great for when you have that little bit of morning stubble. It takes absolutely everything off and leaves a nice smooth feeling. Cleaning is also easy, just rinse the entire head under running water while it is on and then remove cap and clean the row of razors with the small cleaning device that is attached on the bottom of it. The entire shaver is very cool and sleek, great design!

The only flaw is that if you wait too long to use this, and you get hairs that are more than 2mm long, that is where the shaver suffers. It will only get a little more than half of those longer hairs. You can use a regular razor for those hairs though and then go back to this shaver as they come back the next day.

There is also a small trimmer on the side of the shaver (see picture) that is great for cutting long hairs. It is so small though that I'm afraid I might break it when I try to force it out of the side and back in when I am done with it.

I recently purchased the Braun Free Control #1775 electric shaver and I can honestly say that it shaves as close as my old reliable Gillette Sensor razor. I've tried other Braun models costing up to 5 times the price of the Free Control and none of them shaves as close. I think the secret is that is uses just one large cutting block which is heavier and closer cutting than those 2 headed models. Also, the floating foil head is MUCH THINNER than the more expensive Braun models. It floats up and down on your face, and the foil itself is very flexible so it compresses onto the cutter and you barely have to press the shaver to your face. For $35. this shaver out performs $150. models and is an unbelievable value. Don't waste your money on anything more expensive, they don't get any closer than this!!!

I found this razor to be the best one I have ever used! Having sufferd from the "Fred Flintson Effect"(i.e. perminate 5'0clock shadow) all of my life, I have always found it hard to get a close shave, and would always end up with razor burn and having to shave twice a day. WIth this razor, and a little effort, I get a really close, smooth shave which last the day! The charge is quick and last a long time. It is easy to clean, so you constintly get a better shave. FOR THE PRICE and all around quality, you can't beat this razor!

This price - quality is outstanding. this is a well made shaver for the money. Works plugged in when the battery is drained. This is a big feature. Lets say the battery runs out in the middle of your shave. now what do you do? go out half shaved? Well the Norelco I bought does not have this feature, so I'll keep the Braun handy.

The Braun will give you a pretty close shave - but like all electrics, your face must get used to it. you need to give it time.

After 3 weeks of use my face did get used to the shaver. But I decided I liked the Norelco better than a foil shaver. I think it gets the job done faster with less vibration. But if you like a foil shaver or have no preference, I can highly recommend the Braun.

After using electric and cordless shaver models from Norelco, Remington and Braun, I settled on the wet/dry features of the Panasonic models. I replaced my first one with a 3-blade ES8092 6 years ago. It shaved closer than other models, was smoother and more comfortable on my face, and you could wash the heads. It no longers works well. I may just need a new head, but instead of spending up to $40 on a new head, I decided to check out the latest and greatest in new shavers.

I didn't look seriously at the offerings from Norelco and Braun as I have been disappointed the performance of both those models and poor durability with Braun shavers. Have tried Norelcos triple-blade, no good. Tried the top of the line Braun, seemed to take too long to shave, and had to go over the same area 5 times to get a close shave (also VERY noisy)! The Panasonic Arc IV is very quiet, I can ACTUALLY HERE the stubble being shaved, and shaving only takes 5 1/2 minutes (I know this, because the shaver has a timer). I clean it in the stand 4 times/week, which keeps the shaver looking new every time I use it. I like not having to press it hard to my face, to get it to shave close (head is spring loaded, to give the correct amount of pressure). I just bought the cleaning cartridges, 3/$12.70 on Amazon subscriber program, and will have them sent every 6 months. Face still feels shaved after 8 hours (this is very strange, but nice).

I have always been an opponent for an electric razor for a number of reasons, biggest one is that I have sensitive skin and without pressing really hard on my face, never seemed to get a close shave. After my friend got his, and after a recent visit to the big box store where I got to see a 40 dollar price tag on disposables, I was convinced to try. I opted for the most bang for my buck and a model that was wet dry, you can actually use shaving cream with this model, which helps to nearly eliminate the break in irritation of most razors. The shave I get in just 2.5 minutes (the razor has a timer) is so smooth and so easy, its sad to think of all the money and time I have wasted over the years on traditional shaving products. Fantastic shaver, fantastic value.

I've used Braun shavers for about 20 years (my first was a System 1-2-3). I've had several different ones since, ending up with a first-generation Series 7 Pulsonic. I was never convinced the Pulsonic was as good as the Activator it replaced. Maybe a year and a half ago, I started getting bad skin irritation on my neck after I shaved. I've tried several different things with varying degrees of success. And I'm using Nivea For Men Q10 face lotion moisturizer which has made a big difference.

-A Philips-Norelco travel shaver I own showed promise, so I tried the Arcitec with lousy results and returned it to Philips.

-The Philips-Nivea for Men shaver works really, really well, but I didn't like shaving in the shower and it took too long to shave in the morning. Also, no way you can use it dry in the car if you're running late.

-Back to Braun. I picked up a MobileShave M60-B last Christmas at Wal-Mart for about $15. The new foil is huge improvement... Read more

I want my 7526 back. Yea, the charging base was cheap plastic and you had to replace it. I was using a 5550 for nearly 10 years, and it died. I replaced it with a 7526. Worked 3 years and died, so I sent it in for repair and bought a backup.
Both are still working razors, now 7 years old, I gave the spare to my son when he reached shaving age.

Alas, I got tired of replacing the charging base, so I went for the new Series 5. I have been using it for nearly a year now and it is terrible. Here are the issues verses my prior 7526:

1. If you look at the width of the screen, it is significantly smaller. It takes me proportionally longer to shave, almost 1.5x.

2. Newer isn't always better. If you look at the design of the foil on the series 5-550 and the foil on the 7526 you will
note that the Series 5 has much smaller round holes in the micro-screen and they are closer together. The 7526 holes are farther apart, and they are... Read more

I had two (and still have one) of the older model Braun shavers. The base used for charging and cleaning failed to close or latch after several years of use. The Shaver is slightly better. The base is the HUGH improvement because you just drop it in the the base. No arm to close or break! Break is too harsh they just stopped latching (both of my original based stop latching) and it still worked so long as I held it closed. By the way I did and you can purchase a replacement base (which is why I still have one of the old style Braun units)from Amazon. The cleaning cartridges are exactly the same and Amazon sells them as well! All that being said I guess you can tell I LOVE my Braun shavers because I purchased a third one!!

The ES3831K shaver uses a single-blade, fine-cut shaving head. The blade is set at a 78-degree angle and has a motor speed of 8500 RPM, so you can achieve a smooth look and feel. It features a floating head that adjusts to the contours of your face. The blade is nickel-free and hypoallergenic, and the foil is stainless steel, so it won't irritate those with sensitive skin. The blade is extremely sharp and durable, so you get an effective shave every time.

Background you can skip
I am a guy, in his late 30's, heavy (I mean HEAVY) beard growth. By the time it hits noon, dry or wetshave, the shade starts to slowly show.
To make matters worse, I suffer from THE most sensitive skin.

I tried everything, from upgrading my foam to ultraglide superconductor foam for inflamed skin (by Gilette) to going from 2 blades to 3 blades to 4 blades-with-lubra-wd40-strips. You get the point.

Over the years I learned that the very best thing to do for me was to actually do a wet shave under the steamy shower: brush my teeth while I soak under the shower and then after 2.5 minutes of brushing teeth my skin would well prepped to take sensitive skin foam and I could shave infront of my precious fog-free shower mirror.

However, gradually, as the week passed the skin around my neck would get increasingly irritated from the combination of wet shaving and stiff shirt collars and ties which I must wear for work... Read more

First of all here are some points to put into consideration before buying. This shaver is for...
1. Someone who is looking for a TRAVEL shaver that is small and convenient to carry. It comes with a neat carrying case, and only requires two AA batteries that can be found anywhere. One set of batteries can approx. last up to 20 days/shaves-ish. It will still go on, but I can feel the motor running at lower speed.
2. Someone who prefers WET shaving experience whenever possible. (Wet shaving with this product is great. Dry, not so much.)
3. Someone who needs to shave everyday or simply want that clean shaven look everyday. ( It's still a foil electric shaver, it's fast, efficient, everyday.)
4. Someone who needs his travel shaver to have a trimmer. (Frequent long trip? just like me.)
5. Someone who doesn't want to spend 15 minutes cleaning the shaver. Who wants hassle-free and easy cleaning shaver.

After using this shaver for over two weeks on a continuous basis, I can safely write that this shaver does give me a good shave. Unlike other quality travel shavers, this one come with a built in trimmer and a nice hard travel case. The trimmer worked just fine for touch-up work and the hard case protect the shaver's foils a lot better then cloth carrying bag.

The battery life for this shaver is bit questionable. If you don't used the trimmer, the battery life will improved. If not, it can get pretty short. I recommend recharageable batteries. Another reason for not getting a five star is that the shaver vibrate quite a bit. I didn't mind it too much but other users may be bother by it. I have a friend who once joked that this device is a great shaver and a great sex toy! Oh well, each to his own. Like most travel shavers, this device is not meant for people with hairy faces unless you want to shave every four or six hours. Its a single blade device that work well for... Read more
